Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change at the University of Chicago is awarding and managing approximately $6 million to 25-30 grantees to support rigorous evaluations of practical and replicable solutions designed to reduce and eliminate disease specific racial and ethnic health care disparities.  Awards range from $100,000 to $275,000. Three rounds of grantmaking will take place.

Call for Proposals: Round 1
During our first round of grantmaking, a total of 178 project proposals were received.  In December 2006, 11 sites were selected to evaluate their proposed interventions. These proposals included interventions involving community health workers, electronic health records, health literacy screening and use of culturally tailored DVDs designed to empower patients to become more active in their care.

Call for Proposals: Round 2
During our second round of grantmaking, a total of 134 project proposals were received. In May 2008, ten sites were selected to evaluate their proposed interventions. These projects included telephone and internet technologies, nurses, community organizations, and provider incentive programs.

Call for Proposals: Round 3

The third Call for Proposals will be announced in 2008.  Join our email list to receive it as soon as it is released.

Grants awarded under this program go to the organizations (health care organizations, providers or health insurance plans) implementing the intervention. Grantees may conduct the evaluation in partnership with a recognized academic institution or research group.  Proposals must focus on innovative interventions that reduce racial and ethnic disparities in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, depression, and diabetes.

Applications are accepted in two phases. The first phase is a brief proposal submission open to all interested research teams. The second phase is a full proposal submission and will be accepted by invitation only.

All applications, both the brief and full proposals, must be submitted through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Grantmaking Online system.

If you have any questions about the proposal process, please contact us by sending an email to info@solvingdisparities.org or calling (866) 344-9800.
