Finding Answers leads Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Special Session on Health Disparities at 2008 State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research

Nurse-led patient-centered interventions within the context of wider systems change show great promise in reducing health disparities. Because nurses often spend more time with patients and can provide critical care coordination, they are in a unique position to affect change within an organization. However, the link between nurse care and health disparities reduction is sparse. This is why Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change reached out to nursing scholars, students, and supporters at the 2008 State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research sponsored by the American Academy of Nursing and Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science.
During a special session on health disparities created with the support of National Advisory Committee member and nursing scholar Dr. Antonia Villarruel, Finding Answers Director Dr. Marshall Chin, Dr. Lisa Vinci, and Dr. Janice Phillips from the University of Chicago, laid out opportunities for nursing research in this area. Drs. Vinci and Phillips discussed the case for Nurse Case Management to promote quality improvement. The session also explored innovations in health disparities interventions and advised on how nursing proposals could be more competitive in the Finding Answers grantmaking process.
