Project Description

This intervention will utilize an interactive DVD distributed to African-American patients in Birmingham, Alabama to promote hypertension management. The DVD intervention will use storytelling to improve acceptance of, and adherence to, positive health messages that are currently resisted due to a number of factors. The intervention is grounded in patient activation theory and includes the participation of researchers who are prominent in this field. The team, many of whom are representative of the target community, has a long history of serving racial and ethnic groups with a high incidence of uncontrolled blood pressure and we believe the intervention will prove to be a good mechanism for addressing important and recurring health disparities found in the community.
