Project Description

The project builds on a collaboration between UCLA, DREW University and the Los Angeles Department of Health Services and relies on a prospective longitudinal study design to evaluate the implementation, impact, and sustainability of an existing depression intervention at two large public sector clinics in Los Angeles County, California. This clinic-based intervention aims to improve the quality of depression care for African-American and Latino patients residing in the South Central and Northwest regions of Los Angeles County. The intervention program includes: 1) screening protocol for depression embedded in the patient intake process at each clinic; 2) staff training in the use of reminders, treatment algorithms, and an electronic depression registry to aid physicians in their management of depressed patients; 3) post-visit brief counseling protocol for use by nurses and 4) patient education methods to encourage patient self-management. The intervention has strong support from Los Angeles County leaders and has an excellent chance of dissemination across 100 other Los Angeles County clinics once results have been compiled.
